The Orange Garden in Rome: a perfect romantic walk

Located on the Aventine Hill, Parco Savello , commonly known as the Orange Garden, is one of the most romantic and visited places in Rome.

It crosses a big part of the city, extending itself for circa eight thousand square meters and it offers one of the most beautiful views of the city, along with the ones from the Janiculum and Pincian Hill.

History of the Orange Garden in Rome
The Orange Garden in Rome we see today, which gets its name from its strong scent of orange trees, was created by the architect Raffaele De Vico in 1932 in the same place where theSavelli Family’s fortress was edified, near the Basilica of Santa Sabina. That’s why the garden is actually called Parco Savello!

The park is now surrounded by the same wall that boarded the Savelli fortress and some parts of the castle luckily stayed intact! At the main entrance you can, in fact, find a stone construction that belonged to it.

The fortress and its garden were later on given to the Dominican Order of Santa Sabina that turned it into a monastery.

Legend says that the first orange tree was given to the garden by Saint Dominic!

The fountain of Parco Savello
The main entrance of the garden is in Pietro d’Illira Square but you can also access the park from S. Sabina Street or from the Clivio di Rocca Savello.

Located at the main entrance, we can find a fountain that has quite a long history!

The fountain is in fact made out of a granite bathtub found in the roman thermal baths and it was later on decorated with a very particular mask representing the God of the Ocean.

This mask was originally made to decorate another fountain made in 1593 by Giacomo Della Porta for a cattle market. It was later on demolished and the mask was used to decorate another fountain located on the right bank of the Tiber in 1827.

This fountain was dismantled as well and the mask was kept in warehouses until it was brought to the Orange Garden!
