Discover the Fontanelle Cemetery in Naples

We have all heard the phrase ‘See Naples and then die’ at least once, but what does it really mean?

Once upon a time there was a very powerful witch, capable of all kinds of spells.

At the time, Naples was the favorite destination of all those who suffered from love because the beauty of the city overlooking the Vesuvio and the Mediterranean Sea enchanted them to such an extent that they forgot their love pains for the duration of their stay. Unfortunately, however, the memory of their lost love was always there and when the time came to leave, it came back, more painful than ever.

One day the witch made a blood-red mixture, an intoxicating wine that could make the painful memories of the past disappear. She offered a glass to all those unfortunate strangers before they left and, as if by magic, they forgot everything. It was almost like dying, yes, only to be reborn.

That is why you see Naples and then you die. Although, perhaps it would be more accurate to say: ‘See Naples, then die… AND THEN BORN AGAIN!

So what are you waiting for? Love pains or not, now is the time to organize a Naples Tour(Naples private tours).

Today we offer you an itinerary off the beaten path.

Discover the Cemetery of the Fontanelle
More than an itinerary, it is a suggestion for a special day exploring an unknown and mysterious place. The place we are going to talk about today is the Cemetery of the Fontanelle which is located slightly away from the city center but is easily accessible by metro.

Cemetery of the Fontanelle is a former cemetery covering more than 3000 square meters and containing the remains of an unknown number of people. It is located in the borough called Sanità, one of the richest neighborhoods in Naples in terms of history and tradition.

The cemetery is well known for being the place where it was taking place the ritual of the ‘Anime pezzentelle’ , the adoption and care by a Neapolitan of a certain skull of an abandoned soul (called capuzzella) in exchange for protection. Every corner, every corridor of the Fontanelle Cemetery is full of history, anecdotes, legends and curiosities just waiting to be heard . The Cemetery of the Fontanelle is a unique site in the world and therefore absolutely deserves to be visited by anyone coming to Naples. The uniqueness of this Cemetery is not in what you see but in all the stories, anecdotes and curiosities behind it : all information that you will not find written anywhere. This is why we highly recommend visiting the Fontanelle Cemetery in the company of a guide!

Every Saturday and Sunday morning ( 10:00 am ) there is a public guided tour departing from Porta San Gennaro ( Piazza Cavour ) that will first introduce you to the Sanità-Vergini quarter and then reveal all the secrets, mysteries and curiosities about the Fontanelle Cemetery.

So what are you waiting for? Go visit the city and the Fontanelle Cemetery.
