GIARDINO DELLE ROSE
Located near Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence, Giardino delle Rose, which literally translates to “the Rose Garden”, is a natural garden with over 350 types of roses that was designed by architect Giuseppe Poggi, who had also designed Piazzale Michelangelo.
At first Giardino delle Rose belonged to a group of Filippini monks and was named “podere di San Francesco” and it was only opened to the public in 1895 for the Festival of Art and Flowers. This French-style garden is one of the most beloved places by locals for an afternoon out in nature.
GIARDINO DELL’IRIS
Close to Giardino delle Rose, located on the other side of Piazzale Michelangelo, Giardino dell’Iris is another amazing garden that is considered to be a tribute to the city of Florence. The city’s symbolic flower is in fact the Iris. Each year, people donate to Giardino dell’Iris endless types of flowers that are cultivated for three years and then judged by an international jury, intending to award the best flower a gold Florin.
Giardino dell’Iris is only open from late April to late May.
GIARDINO DEI GIUSTI
Opened in 2007, Giardino dei Giusti is divided into two main parts. In one of which you’ll find an over 80-year-old carob tree, the symbolic tree of the Garden of the Righteous in Jerusalem that was imported and planted here in 1960. The other part of the garden is filled with many different and colorful plants, providing different fragrances and shapes throughout the seasons.
GIARDINO DELL’ORTICOLTURA
This garden was actually created as an experimental garden in the XIX century and it’s nowadays housing one of the most interesting architectural items: Giacomo Roster’s steel and glass pavilion, built in 1879 for the Tuscan Horticultural Society. Giardino dell’Orticoltura usually hosts a lot of events, mainly food and cultural activities and, because of this, this garden feels like a park.
GIARDINO DEL BORGO
Created by Ser Alamanno Salviati, Giardino del Borgo is one of the greatest treasures when it comes to gardens in Florence. This garden is, in fact, filled with exotic and rare plants and it was the first place where the jasmine was ever planted in Tuscany.
