A UNESCO World Heritage Panorama
The Florentine skyline at sunset truly has nothing to envy to the views admired in metropolises scattered around the world. Whether you are in the heart of the city or outside the historic center, the view that will unfold before your eyes will always be something unique. The hill of Fiesole, the Arno River, the Ponte Vecchio and the other bridges, the Dome of Brunelleschi, the rooftops of Florence... is there anything more beautiful in the world? According to us, no!
Piazzale Michelangelo
The first place we want to tell you about is Piazzale Michelangelo, the quintessential spot to admire a magical sunset with the Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo in front of you thanks to its elevated position above the city. It's one of the favorite spots not only among tourists but also among Florentines themselves.
San Miniato Abbey
If you happen to arrive late and Piazzale Michelangelo is crowded, you have a very valid alternative: the church of San Miniato. A monumental staircase will take you to the top, but the effort will be totally rewarded by the view, which is truly priceless. The skyline of Florence from above will show you the beauty of the Duomo and Palazzo Vecchio in all its glory. A postcard? No, even better!
Forte Belvedere
Sunsets, but not only. In this historic fortress located near the ancient city walls of Costa San Giorgio, when the sun goes down, you can visit outdoor exhibitions and sip excellent cocktails. The breathtaking view is over the historic center of the city. The Fort is open to the public in summer and admission is free. It's also reachable on foot from Ponte Vecchio, making for a pleasant walk towards the hill, at the end of which you will be absolutely rewarded by the panorama.
Orti di Parnaso
If you want a more secluded place because you're not a fan of crowds, just head to the Orti di Parnaso, the highest part of the Orticoltura Garden. They are located at a lower position compared to Forte Belvedere and Piazzale Michelangelo, but the view is no less fascinating. After the Golden Hour, you might linger there and witness the illumination of the Tepidarium by Giacomo Roster; the name is inspired by the sculpture inside the park, a fountain in the shape of a snake.
Ponte Vecchio
Despite not being in an elevated position, this place is among the best to enjoy a fantastic sunset as the daylight fades. Alternatively, if you want to admire the Ponte Vecchio up close, just head to the exit of the Uffizi or one of the nearby bridges.
Terrazza B-Roof
The last place we want to take you to is at the top of the Hotel Baglioni. Once known as the Terrazza Brunelleschi, it's one of the rooftop bars with the most beautiful view of Florence. The sunset in front of you will be decidedly romantic, with a close-up view of the Florence Cathedral and its beautiful Dome. Order a spritz or a prosecco and then... enjoy the view!
Conclusions
In conclusion, discover the Florence that has enchanted all the men who have visited or lived in the city of lilies in past epochs. Watch the sky gradually change color, tinted in all shades of blue, indigo, and purple that are then reflected on the Arno River and the surrounding buildings. Whether you choose Piazzale Michelangelo or Ponte Vecchio, Forte Belvedere or the Abbey Staircase, you will still make the best choice because the sunset over Florence is unique from any perspective!
